Katherine Carson Watercolour Workshop
Wrens from Katherine Carson’s January Watercolour Workshop.
A Beautiful Day of Watercolour at The Hive
In January, The Hive Art Gallery in Currumbin was filled with colour, creativity and quiet concentration as artists gathered for a special full-day watercolour workshop with Northern Rivers artist Katherine Carson (@katherinecarsonart).
From the first brushstrokes to the final delicate details, it was a day of learning, connection and artistic growth. Participants worked on a beautiful blue wren study — a subject perfectly suited to watercolour’s luminous qualities. Under Katherine’s expert guidance, students explored:
Building soft, layered backgrounds
Achieving depth through glazing
Capturing fine feather detail
Balancing bold colour with subtle tonal transitions
Creating texture in timber and foliage
The results were simply stunning.
From carefully rendered studies on white grounds to expressive interpretations with soft, atmospheric backgrounds, each artwork reflected both the individuality of the artist and the confidence gained throughout the day.
Katherine’s calm and generous teaching style created a relaxed yet focused studio environment. Students were guided step-by-step through composition, colour mixing and brush control, while also being encouraged to trust their own artistic instincts.
There was plenty of one-on-one feedback, shared discoveries, and those magical moments when a painting suddenly comes to life — a sparkle in the eye, the glow of cobalt in the throat, the lift of a perfectly placed highlight.
Beyond the technique, the workshop embodied what we love most at The Hive — artists gathering around tables, sharing ideas, encouraging one another and rediscovering the joy of slow, mindful making.
The atmosphere was warm, collaborative and inspiring — exactly what a summer workshop should be.
Looking Ahead
Due to the wonderful response and glowing feedback from participants, we’re excited to announce that more watercolour workshops are already being planned.
