All ages and experience levels are welcome.

Slow Sundays are mornings carved out for slow exploration and experimentation. Tend to your lifelong creative practice through the joy and beauty of watercolour.

Open to all skill levels, Slow Sundays in Watercolour is a four-week course developed for anyone looking to start, return, or strengthen their creative practice. We will begin with foundational practices and setup before gradually delving into reference gathering, observation, composition, and watercolour-specific techniques.

What’s commonly thought to be an unforgiving medium can actually be quite the opposite. Within it, watercolour possesses many surprises and delights. Given time, it can be understood and worked with. Come and experience the organic nature of how pigments flow, and transparency builds into beautiful outcomes.

In five weeks, you will be equipped with foundational practices, a community to share it with, and the freedom to start when inspiration strikes. With a body of several experiments, you will find the momentum to develop your creative practice beyond the course.

To ensure ample opportunity for individual feedback, support, and personalised guidance along the way, this course will be limited to a maximum of 10 students.

What's included
All essential materials will be provided, including:

  • Watercolour paints

  • Paint palettes

  • Watercolour paper (100% cotton and sketching paper)

  • Wooden boards for stretching your paper

  • Brushes

  • Water vessels

  • Paper towel

  • Cotton buds

  • Masking fluid

  • Masking tape

  • Pencils

  • Pens

  • Erasers

  • Sharpeners

  • Reference materials

Students are also encouraged to bring along their own favourite materials if they’d like to experiment or share with fellow students.
Each week, you'll take your work home and gradually build your own body of work as a collection of experiments, explorations and paintings throughout the four-week course. It is recommended that you invest in a folio to keep your work safe week to week.

Your Slow Sunday
Arrive from 9:50am to settle into the sunlit studio before class begins at 10am.

We'll start each session with an introduction to the day's focus and a demonstration, before moving into guided painting time. Throughout the class, Lucy will be available for individual feedback, questions and personalised support.

We'll finish at 12pm, with an open invitation to continue the conversation over lunch at Bread Social, just a few minutes walk from The Hive Art Gallery.

Lunch is completely optional and at your own expense. Although art making can be an individual experience, it is often enriched by the way we share it. Think of this time as an opportunity to get to know your fellow creatives and strengthen your community.
